Call them niche, cult, overrated, inspirational – or call them one of the greatest success stories in global football fan culture.
PSS Sleman are a small team competing in the Indonesian Liga 2 that hail from the neighbourhood of Sleman just north of Yogyakarta in Java. The club has become relatively famous worldwide thanks to its “ultra” fan club, Brigata Curva Sud (BCS). Creative, non-violent and colourful, they broke away from PSS ‘ other fan club, Slemania, a hooligan faction. BCS is now so influential the group actually sponsors the club via sales of their clothing and accessories.
In the first of a six-part series exploring the stories of iconic football clubs and their fiercely dedicated fans, our film follows the Slemani ultras and looks at how the women in the group have challenged cultural norms and helped change the face of the football fandoms.
