South Africa has launched its vaccination campaign as part of an observational study using shots from manufacturer Johnson & Johnson.
The government says it plans to give 500,000 of the single-dose vaccines mainly targeting healthcare workers.
It is the first country in the world to use Johnson & Johnson’s jab against the more transmissible strain predominant in the country.
The vaccination is almost 60 percent effective against moderate to severe forms of the new variant.
